SAN MARCOS – Texas State ended a four-match winning streak by UT Arlington with a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-19, 25-22) Wednesday night. To put it simply, Texas State dominated.
Â
Amari Deardorff and
Alexandra Simms combined for 25 kills to lead the Bobcat. Both finished the match hitting in the high .300s. In fact, four Bobcats finished above .300 to help the team hit .322 for the match while holding UT Arlington to a .105 hitting percentage.
Â
Head Coach
Karen Chisum praised her entire team but specifically the play of
Caylin Mahoney. The setter gave out 31 assists with eight digs and four kills. Mahoney ran the offense cleanly as the Bobcats added some crossing motion with which UT Arlington struggled mightily.
Â
The new wrinkle in the offense set up the great night by Simms.
Shelby Vas Matt also put together a strong night for Texas State with eight kills and just one error.
Â
As well as the offense did, Texas State's defense at the net was outstanding. The Bobcats put up eight blocks in the first two sets and hit so well that the Mavericks did not register a single block until the final set.
Molly Ahrens led the team with five block assists, but four Bobcats tallied at least three blocks. Behind the block,
Ali Hubicsak and
Sierra Smith combined for 21 digs.
Â
UT Arlington started the match strong with a quick 4-1 lead and regained a three-point lead at 11-8. The Bobcats came back to tie it and scored seven of the final eight points of the set, capped by a Deardorff kill to win it.
Â
The beginning of the second set went back and forth, but when the Mavericks pulled within one, 19-18, the Bobcats put on the jets. Again, they closed out strong, scoring six of the last seven points to win the second set. The team carried that momentum into the third and final set, jumping out to a 3-0 lead.
Â
Wednesday's win marks the first time Texas State has swept an opponent since sweeping Georgia State on the road Oct. 6. This one was even more impressive after the Bobcats went five sets against UT Arlington in the last meeting between the two teams.
Â
Texas State will stay home this weekend to host Sun Belt Conference leading Western Kentucky at 6 p.m. Friday and will celebrate Senior Day against Georgia State at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
