Auburn Downs Texas State On Day One Of SMU Invitational

Auburn remained unbeaten on the season as the Tigers defeated Texas State, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-19) in the first match for both team at the SMU Doubletree Invitational hosted in Moody Coliseum in Dallas.

 

Texas State dropped to 4-5 overall on the season but will have an opportunity to get back to .500 when the team returns to action this evening against SMU.

 

Errors were the story of the match for Texas State as the team finished with 20 hitting errors, eight serving errors and five receiving errors.

 

Texas State entered the team's first match of the day having performed exceptionally in the serving game over the teams last two games with nine aces compared to just five errors during that span. However, that facet of the game was not a strength for the Bobcats on Friday as the team posted four aces awhile committing eight serving errors.

 

At the net, the Tigers' block created some problems for Texas State, putting up 10 blocks over three sets against the Bobcat attack.

 

Texas State was leading or tied with Auburn midway through each set in Friday's match, but errors eventually caught up with the Bobcats in each set. The team was up 8-7 in the first set, 10-8 in the second set and tied 10-10 in the third set before eventually falling in each instance.

 

Ashlee Hilbun put down her first four swings of the day for kills en route to a team-high nine kills for the match. She also posted six digs for the Bobcats.

 

Alexandra Simms had seven kills and just one hitting error for a .400 hitting percentage, while Molly Ahrens had four kills on nine swings for a .444 hitting percentage to go along with her team-high three blocks.

 

Caleigh McCorquodale (13 assists) and Caylin Mahoney (12 assists) shared setting duties as the team hit .101 for the contest.

 

Laura Whalen led the back row defense with seven digs.

 

Texas State will play its second match of the day at 7:30 p.m. on Friday against tournament-host SMU.
