College Station, Texas –
Texas State volleyball could not overcome miscues on Friday afternoon in College Station as the Bobcats fell 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-16) to Texas A&M at Reed Arena in the season opener for both teams. Alexandra Simms led the team offensively with a career-high 13 kills, while Caleigh McCorquodale added a double-double with 13 assists and 12 digs.

Texas State will play later this afternoon at 5:30 p.m. against North Dakota in the team's second game of the Texas A&M Invitational.

The Bobcats began the match strong as Amari Deardorff put down the first kill of the season for Texas State and followed it up with two more for a 3-1 advantage. The teams played even until 7-7 when the Aggies went on a 6-0 run to pull in front 13-7. Simms would help keep it close with a team-high five kills in the first set, but it would not be enough as Texas A&M pulled away for a 25-16 first-set win.

Texas State began the second set with a 1-0 deficit following a team red card as a result of a delay of game, and that would be an ominous sign of things to come as the Bobcats found themselves down 10-1 in the second. Texas State made a comeback to within seven, 14-7, on a kill from freshman Morgan McDaniel, but Texas A&M used some strong serving down the stretch to help pull away to a 25-15 victory in the second set. Simms had five more kills in the second set for Texas State to lead the team.

In the third set, Texas State looked to have the momentum early as a 4-2 run from the Bobcats made the score 5-5 and was capped off by a kill from Simms. However, the Aggies scored seven of the next eight points for a 12-6 lead that the Bobcats could not overcome.

Simms hit .212 for the match and added three digs in her season debut. Ashlee Hilbun tallied eight kills, eight digs and a .300 hitting percentage from her middle blocker position.

Caylin Mahoney made her team debut with a team-high 16 assists to go along with six digs.

Molly Ahrens made her first career start for Texas State and finished with three kills and three blocks, while freshman Natasha Fomina also started for the first time in her career.

The Bobcats held a 46-41 advantage in digs for the match over the Aggies, but eight Texas A&M aces and seven blocks helped the home team to its first win of the season.
