Staff Nets Career-High 23 Points, Bobcats Capture 79-61 Win Over A&M-Corpus Christi

San Marcos, TexasMatt Staff recorded a career high 23 points as the Texas State men's basketball team rolled to a 79-61 victory over visiting A&M-Corpus Christi tonight at Strahan Coliseum. The Bobcats improve to 10-15, 3-9 in league play. The Islanders fall to 4-21 and 3-9 in conference play.

Staff grabbed 11 boards to go along with his career-high scoring performance tonight. Travis Jones tallied 17 points, including five triples. Brooks Ybarra scored 13 points and Wesley Davis added 12 points.

Despite scoring just 10 points in the first ten minutes of the second half, Texas State found a way to keep it together. The Islanders outscored the Bobcats 42-33 in the second period, but they failed to make a single three-pointer in the contest (0-13).

A dunk by Davis put the Bobcats up 74-58 with one minute to go in the game. The Islanders fouled the Bobcats four times in the final minute of play to send the Bobcats to the free throw line. Texas State made five of eight free throws to hang on grab the 79-61 win at Strahan.

Texas State began the game on a 17-1 run to cap the first half off with a 48.1 shooting percentage from the floor. Jones was 3-for-3 from long range to start the contest, as he helped the Bobcats control the first period. A four-point play by Davis gave the Bobcats a 42-15 lead with 3:40 remaining in the period. Texas State entered the locker room with a 46-19 lead, including a 14-for-15 performance from the charity stripe.

A&M-Corpus Christi was led by Chris Hawkins-Mast who tallied 13 points and 12 points. Myron Dempsey had 12 points and nine rebounds, while Jason Smith added 10 points off the bench.

Texas State will play at South Dakota in the Sears ESPN Bracketbusters game scheduled for Feb. 18. The Bobcats will continue their road trip when they face Southeastern La. on Wed., Feb. 22 in the Southland Conference Game of the Week to be aired on the SLC TV Network, as well as ESPN3.com.
