Annapolis, Md. – The Texas State football team made a fourth quarter comeback attempt but it wasn't enough as the Bobcats fell to Navy, 21-10 Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Joplo Bartu finished with a game-high 16 tackles for the second straight week.
Navy scored right out of halftime, recovering a Texas State fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half. On the first play from scrimmage, the Midshipmen ran it in from 16 yards to make it 14-0.
After going down 21-3, Isaiah Battle provided the highlight of the day for the Bobcats, scoring on the team's first play on the ensuing drive. Shaun Rutherford threw a pass right down the seam inside the left hashmark and Battle caught it and took it to the endzone for a 62-yard touchdown. Rutherford finished the day with 290 yards passing.
Texas State kept its comeback hopes alive on the next play, recovering an onside kick at its own 46 yard line. The Bobcats drove all the way down to the Navy 34-yard line but came up short on 4th down, allowing the Midshipmen to take over.
Right before halftime the Bobcats drove the ball down to the Navy four yard line and attempted a fake field goal. Unfortunately the attempt was no good and Texas State went into halftime trailing 7-0.
Texas State forced an early turnover by Navy on the Midshipmen's first drive ofgame. Linebacker Jerrid Jeter-Gilmon recovered a loose pitch that was on the turf at the Bobcats' own 25-yard line to kill the early drive. It was his second recovered turnover of the year after intercepting a pass earlier in the year against Utah State.
Next up for the Bobcats will its final road trip of the season as it battles UTSA for the first time ever. Game time from the Alamodome is set for 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 24.
