San Marcos, Texas – Matt Staff tied his career high of 28 points, as the senior forward helped guide Texas State past visiting UT-Tyler tonight at Strahan Coliseum. The victory improves the Bobcats' record to 2-0 to start the season.
In addition to Staff's 28 points, he also grabbed 11 rebounds to record his first double-double of the season. Junior transfer Joel Wright added 19 points and nine rebounds, while junior Reid Koenen chipped in 13 points and eight boards.
The first half was all Staff, as he had nine of Texas State's first 14 points. Texas State led by as many as 12 points, before taking a 10-point lead on the Patriots entering the locker room.
Texas State continued its strong play in the second half, which included a 19-for-25 effort at the free throw line. The Bobcats made eight free throws in the final five minutes of play, and had 14 more total attempts in the game than the Patriots. The Bobcats went on a 25-14 run to end the game and grab their second win at home.
The Bobcats shared the ball well once again, as 10 different players scored tonight. Texas State finished 41.8 percent (28-67) from the floor and 77.4 percent (24-31) from the free throw line. Texas State out-rebounded UT-Tyler 50-37, and captured 10 steals. The Bobcats also recorded 20 total assists.
UT-Tyler was led by Jordan Cannon who had 13 points and four assists. Travis Dykman added 12 points for the Patriots. UT-Tyler shot 39.1 percent (25-64) from the floor and 28.6 percent (6-21) from the charity stripe.
Next up for Texas State will be Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown and SMU on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. at Strahan Coliseum.
