San Marcos, Texas – 4,458 fans crowded into Strahan Coliseum tonight to watch the Texas State men's basketball team take on I-35 rival UTSA. The attendance was the fourth largest in school history as the fans were loud from start to finish. UTSA came away with the 80-75 victory over Texas State for the first time in San Marcos since 2008.
Senior Brooks Ybarra registered a career-high 24 points and five rebounds to lead Texas State. Travis Jones chipped in 18 points, five of six from long range. Texas State shot 38.2 percent from the floor and 61.5 percent from the charity stripe.
Texas State trailed by as many as 14 points in the second half, but the home crowd helped the Bobcats fight back. Jones hit a trio three-pointers and Ybarra added three points down a six minute stretch to cut the Roadrunners lead to 73-66 with 1:58 remaining. A three-pointer by Wesley Davis brought Texas State to within three points with 14 seconds to go on the clock. Texas State was forced to foul and UTSA hit four free throws on the next two possessions to keep the lead and grab the win tonight.
Texas State hit eight three-pointers in the first half as it shot 47.1 percent from long range. UTSA was able to stay one step ahead of the Bobcats as shot 64.3 percent from the floor and 8-of-11 from the charity stripe.
UTSA was led by Jeromie Hill who scored 24 points (10-of-12) and 11 rebounds. Melvin Johnson III added 15 points and rebounds. Kannon Burrage came off the bench to score 13 points and Michael Hale III added 12 points. The Roadrunners shot 50 percent (28-for-56) from the floor and 81 percent (17-21) from the free throw line.
Texas State will travel to A&M-Corpus Christi to face the Islanders on January 25 at 7 p.m. The Bobcats return to Strahan Coliseum on Saturday, January 28 to host UT Arlington at 4 p.m.
