San Marcos, Texas – A crowd of 1,277 was at Strahan Coliseum on Thursday evening as the Texas State volleyball team opened up conference play against I-35 rival UTSA. Unfortunately for Bobcat fans, the Roadrunners handed the Bobcats their first home loss to begin Southland Conference play since 2004.
UTSA took the match in three sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-16) and inched closer to a .500 mark with the win, improving its overall record to 7-8, while Texas State had its three-match winning streak snapped in falling to 9-6 overall.
Prior to Thursday night's match, the Bobcats had won their past eight home matches against UTSA.
The Bobcats were never able to get on track during the match as the Roadrunners jumped out to leads in all three sets, forcing the home team to play catch-up throughout the night. A total of 15 different Bobcats saw action in the match as head coach Karen Chisum tried to find a winning combination, but Texas State was unable to overcome more than a .150 hitting percentage differential (.296-116) in favor of the visitors.
For the Bobcats, the team was led offensively by senior Amber Calhoun and sophomore Amari Deardorff who both finished the match with eight kills. Sophomore Melissa Toth came off the bench to record six kills, while senior Lindy DeGeare added five winners along with a team-high three aces, increasing her team-leading total to 23 for the season.
The UTSA block played a large role in the match as the Roadrunners held a 10-5 advantage in the category and did not allow any Texas State player to hit better than .250 for the match.
Junior Caleigh McCorquodale led the team with nine digs, while junior Patti Bradshaw added seven after serving as the team's libero for the final two sets.
Texas State will look to pick up its first home Southland win of the season on Saturday when Texas A&M-Corpus Christi visits Strahan Coliseum for a 2 p.m. match. Tickets for the match are available in advance through the Texas State Athletics Ticket Office or at the doors of Strahan.
