Denton, Texas – Texas State controlled its match against North Texas from the outset on Friday evening as the Bobcats defeated the Mean Green in three sets – 25-19, 26-24, 25-16 – on the first day of the Mean Green Invitational.
After a six-point, first-set win, the Bobcats found themselves trailing by a large margin midway through the second set. With everything going right for the home team, North Texas led 14-6 after a kill from UNT's Eboni Godfrey. However, Texas State maintained its composure and steadily chipped away at its deficit, going on a 5-1 run to pull within four, 15-11, on an ace from senior Lindy DeGeare. The Mean Green maintained its four-point advantage until the Bobcats went on a five-point spurt that propelled the team into the lead for the first time in the set, 23-22. The Texas State offense came through late in the set as kills from Rachel James and Amber Calhoun helped the team close out the second set, 26-24, to take a 2-0 lead into intermission.
After the break, the Bobcats came out in dominant fashion in the third set with a 7-0 run behind the serving of DeGeare. That run put the team on its way to a nine-point win in the final set to take the match and improve to 7-5 this season.
With the loss, North Texas dropped to 7-5 overall.
Along with a match-high three aces, DeGeare posted eight kills with a .333 hitting percentage. Sophomore Amari Deardorff posted a team-best nine kills, while Calhoun chipped in with six kills and a match-high five blocks (two solo, three assists). James, who started on the outside for the first time this season, added five kills on 15 swings for a .333 hitting percentage.
Junior Caleigh McCorquodale returned to the starting lineup Friday evening and guided the Bobcat offense to a .278 hitting percentage for the match, dishing out a match-high 26 assists while also putting down four kills of her own.
The Bobcats excelled defensively at the net, finishing the match with nine blocks compared to just two for North Texas.
Texas State returns to the court on Saturday, September 17 with two matches to finish the Mean Green Invitational. The Bobcats play Kennesaw State at 1:30 p.m. before taking on Jackson State at 4:30 p.m.
