Men’s Basketball Wins 66-61 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi, Texas – Cameron Johnson and Ryan White each scored 21 points to lead the Texas State men's basketball team to a 66-61 victory at the American Bank Center on Tuesday night.

 

In addition to their 21 points, Johnson pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, while White handed out four assists and collected a game-high four steals for the Bobcats, who improved their record to 13-12 overall and 8-3 in Southland Conference play. In addition, Tony Bishop scored 10 points and also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for Texas State, 

 

Justin Reynolds scored 16 points to lead the Islanders, while Demond Watt, Garland Judkins and Chris Mast added 10 points each for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which dropped to 8-18 overall and 3-8 in Southland Conference play.

 

The game began as a battle of wills by a pair of talented front lines as Bishop and Johnson battled point-for-point with Reynolds and  Watt early in the game. Texas State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead  as Bishop scored on a jumper in the lane and White added a lay-up off a steal before watching Reynolds help the Islanders take a 7-5 lead.

 

The Bobcats tied the game on Johnson's jumper in the paint and took the lead for good when Eddie Rios hit Johnson for a lay-up to give the Bobcats a 15-13 advantage.

 

After Johnson's lay-up, Brooks Ybarra made the only three-point shot in the first half with a trey from the right baseline. White added a pair of free throws and Rios made a jumper to give the Bobcats their biggest lead in the opening period at 22-14.

 

However, the Bobcats would score just two more points in the final four minutes of the period to take a 24-22 lead into intermission. The two points came on a jumper by John Bowman in the middle of the lane.

 

 

Texas State came out in the second and half and extended its lead to 33-24 after Johnson scored on a lay-up off a steal by Bowman. But, A&M-CC scored six straight points to close to within 33-28 before Johnson made another lay-up to stop the run and give Texas State a 35-28 lead with 14:23 left in the game.

 

But, Islanders came right back once again when Judkins stole the ball for a lay-up and Jawan Nelson made another lay-up to pull back to within 35-32.

 

The Bobcats stopped the run with a pair of free throws by Bishop and Ybarra exchanged three-point shots with Reynolds to help Texas State maintain a 40-36 lead with 12 minutes to play.

 

The Islanders continued their rally when Reynolds made a lay-up to tie the score at 40-40. The Bobcats answered once again when Johnson scored four consecutive points on a jumper in the lane and a pair of free throws. Rios also drove into the lane for a 10-foot jumper to extend Texas State's lead back to six points (50-44).

 

The Islanders cut the lead in half when Reynolds nailed another trey, but White made it a two possession game once again with a lay-up off a steal.

The Islanders didn't get any closer than five points until the final minute of the game when Judkins drove for a lay-up and Hollis Hill stole the inbounds pass and put in a lay-up to make the score 64-61 with 11 seconds left to play.

 

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was forced to foul White on the inbounds play and he made two free throws to make the final score 66-61.
