Arlington, Texas – Texas State had its offense in full gear on Wednesday evening as the Bobcats downed UT Arlington, 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-19), at Texas Hall to earn the team's eighth sweep of the season. Texas State hit above .300 as a team for its third consecutive match and the ninth time this season while four Bobcats hit at least .333 for the match.
The Bobcats' offensive barrage was led by sophomore Amari Deardorff and senior Lindy DeGeare. Deardorff was nearly unstoppable on the right side throughout the night, putting down 12 kills on 22 attempts for a .455 hitting percentage. DeGeare also put up big numbers, recording 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage from her outside hitter position.
Deardorff's performance was her third straight match with at least 11 kills and a .400 hitting percentage, while DeGeare had at least 10 kills for the fourth consecutive match.
The duo helped Texas State improve to 13-6 overall this season and 4-1 in the Southland Conference after beginning the conference season 0-1. With the loss, UT Arlington dropped to 7-12 overall and 3-2 in the Southland.
Sophomore Melissa Toth added nine kills with a .333 hitting percentage, and sophomore Ashlee Hilbun put down five kills on just eight swings without an error in helping the Bobcats finish with a .341 team hitting percentage for the match.
Junior setter Caleigh McCorquodale continued her streak of impressive play with a 36-assist performance along with three kills. It was the fourth consecutive match that McCorquodale averaged at least 10 assists per set.
Texas State's defense was led by a nine-dig performance from senior Amber Calhoun and eight digs from Rachel Doyle. At the net, Calhoun, Hilbun and McCorquodale all tied for the team high with two blocks each.
The match looked to be a close one from the outset with the score tied nine times within the first 18 total points. However, the Bobcats went on a 9-1 from that point to pull ahead 18-10 before going on to take the opening set, 25-14.
Set two was a back-and-forth affair with neither team taking more than a three-point advantage until late in the set when McCorquodale aced the Mavericks for a 22-18 Texas State lead. The Bobcats maintained their four-point lead, capping off the set with a 25-21 win on a kill from Deardorff.
Texas State jumped out to an early lead in the final set before UT Arlington came back to take a 12-11 lead midway through the set. However, Texas State regrouped with a 7-4 run that put the Bobcats in the lead for good. Kills from DeGeare and Toth along with an ace from Calhoun down the stretch helped the Bobcats cap off the sweep with a score of 25-19.
Texas State hits the road again on Saturday when the team heads to Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La., for a 2 p.m. game against the Lady Demons.
