San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State men's basketball team won its second straight game by beating UT Pan American 82-70 Tuesday night in Strahan Coliseum. Five Bobcats scored in double figures to hold off the charging Broncs late in the second half as the Bobcats improved their overall record to 5-9, while the UTPA fell to 3-14.
Cameron Johnson led all players in scoring with 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. Ryan White had 13 points and four rebounds, while Matt Staff recorded 11 points and seven boards in his first start of the season for Texas State. Both Travis Jones and Uriel Segura scored 10 points each to round out the Bobcats top scorers.
Texas State took a 17-point lead into intermission that was sparked by a 17-point first half performance by Johnson. The Bobcats largest lead of the first half came when John Bowman nailed a free throw with 36 seconds on the clock to put Texas State up by 19 points.
One of the highlights in the first half came on a fast break dunk by Johnson with less than four minutes left to bring the crowd out of their seats.
The Broncs went on an 11-3 run to start the second period and cut the Bobcats lead to nine after a pair of treys gave UTPA a sudden boost of energy.
UTPA managed to tie the score twice in the last six minutes of the game, but each time Texas State responded. White broke the first tie with a pair of free throws. On the second tie, Tony Bishop recorded a layup as the Bobcats went on to outscore the Broncs 14-4 to come away with the victory.
Both teams were fairly even in shooting percentage, but the biggest difference came from the 31 bench points by Texas State compared to 12 points by UTPA. Another game changer was that Texas State scored 29 points off UTPA miscues and the Broncs scored a mere nine points.
Texas State returns to Strahan Coliseum on Saturday, Jan. 8 as it opens up Southland Conference play against Northwestern State. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
