Volleyball: Home Opener Against Prairie View A&M Set For Tuesday

Game Notes

San Marcos, Texas –
For the first time this season, the Texas State volleyball team will play on its home court when Prairie View A&M makes the trip to San Marcos for a 6:30 p.m. match on Tuesday at Strahan Coliseum.

After playing two tournaments away from home, the Bobcats will play the Lady Panthers just three days they are set to host their home tournament, the CenturyLink Premier.

Texas State will enter Tuesday's match with a 2-4 record after going 0-3 against stiff competition at the SMU Doubletree Invite last weekend. The Bobcats will look to rebound against the Lady Panthers, a team they hold a 4-0 record against all-time.

A win on Tuesday would be the 700th in the career of head coach Karen Chisum. She would join just six other active NCAA Division I coaches with 700 career victories.

Scouting Texas State
Despite entering Tuesday's match on a three-game losing streak, the Bobcats have reason to believe that they will turn things around. Texas State performed better than its opponents statistically in nearly all categories during the three-match SMU Doubletree Invitational. The Bobcats averaged 13.9 kills per set, compared to 11.9 kills per set for their opponents. Texas State also hit for a higher percentage (.218-.208) while recording more assists (180-152) and aces (12-9). The Bobcats even had more combined points than their opponents (298-294).

The difference in last weekend's matches was at the service line, where Texas State committed 33 errors compared to just 18 by opponents.

AJ Watlington (2.96 kills per set) leads four Bobcats averaging more than 2.00 kills per set this season. The senior from Aledo, Texas, recorded a career-high 20 kills against Texas Tech on Sunday and now has 71 kills this season. A right side hitter by nature, Watlington has spent much of the season playing on the left side for the Bobcats early on this season. She has recorded a double-double in each of her last three matches.

Also averaging at least 2.00 kills per set for the Bobcats is Amari Deardorff (2.56), Preslie Alexander (2.54) and Matti Schumacher (2.36).

Defensively, Ashlee Hilbun made a statement in the team's match against Texas Tech as she recorded 10 blocks. A freshman from Austin, Hilbun made her season debut in the team's first game of the SMU Doubletree Invite against UC Davis before starting the next two matches against SMU and Texas Tech.
