Volleyball: UT Pan American Preview

Bobcats play for the fourth time in four days on Monday at UTPA

San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State volleyball team will play its fourth match in as many days on Monday when the Bobcats visit UT Pan American for a rare early-week contest. The two teams will meet in Edinburg, Texas, as Texas State takes to the road following a four-match homestand.

After defeating Prairie View A&M for head coach Karen Chisum's 700th career victory last Tuesday, the Bobcats finished 2-1 in their annual home tournament, the CenturyLink Premier. The team downed Tennessee-Martin and North Texas on Friday before falling to Alabama in the championship match.

Texas State enters Monday's match with a 5-5 record so far this season. The Bobcats will look to improve upon a 1-1 road record against a team that is 1-10 this season.

UT Pan American's lone win this season came in its second match of the year against fellow-Southland Conference school Lamar. The Broncs also played three other SLC opponents this season as they lost to UT Arlington, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTSA all in straight sets.

Scouting Texas State

The Bobcats have won three of their last four matches entering Monday night's contest, including a 2-1 mark at the CenturyLink Premier. Amber Calhoun and Melinda Cave led Texas State during the tournament as the pair earned all-tournament teams honors.

Texas State has shown its depth and versatility frequently to this point in the season as 15 different players have appeared in at least five sets through the team's first 10 matches. Freshman Preslie Alexander is the team's leader in kills with 93, but 10 different Bobcats are averaging at least one kill per set for the team.

The Bobcats have hit a substantially higher percentage than their opponents on the season. Texas State enters Monday's match with a .267 team hitting percentage while opponents have combined to hit at just a .175 clip.

A big block has also been a staple of the 2010 Bobcats as the team is averaging more than two blocks per set as a team compared to just 1.63 blocks per set by their opponents.

Scouting UT Pan American

UTPA began the season 1-1 but has lost its last nine consecutive matches to fall to 1-10. The Broncs are led offensively by Marci Logan, who is averaging 3.08 kills per set. However, UT Pan American has struggled with its offensive efficiency as a team, hitting just .100 for the season.

Defensively, the Broncs have two players averaging more than 3.00 digs per set in Ariana Bermea and Kaitlin Vasquez. The UTPA block has struggled mightily, averaging just 1.55 blocks per set this season.
