San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State women's volleyball team begins its 2010 season on Friday when the Bobcats travel to New York for the Hofstra/Asics Invitational. The four-team tournament will take place on Friday and Saturday at the Physical Education Building on the Hofstra University campus.
Head coach Karen Chisum leads the Bobcats into their first match of the season on Friday against Missouri State at 1 p.m. CST. Following that contest, Texas State will play tournament-host Hofstra at 6 p.m. on Friday before wrapping up the two-day tournament on Saturday against Canisius at 2 p.m.

Scouting Texas State
The Bobcats enter the season with nine newcomers and seven returnees from a team that finished 22-13 last season and won the Southland Conference Tournament. Four of the returnees were named 2010 Preseason All-SLC selections as senior Mo Middleton and junior Amber Calhoun earned first team honors, and seniors AJ Watlington and Melinda Cave were named to the second team. Texas State, which has captured either the SLC regular season or tournament championship in each of the past three years, was picked to win the Southland Conference in the SLC Preseason Coaches Poll.

The Bears and Bobcats square off in both teams' first match of the season. Missouri State received two votes in the AVCA Preseason Poll and was picked to finish second this season in the MVC. Friday's match marks the fifth meeting between the two teams all time. Texas State won the last meeting, which also came at the Hofstra Tournament, in 1999.

Hofstra was picked to finish eighth in the CAA Coaches Poll after finishing with a 13-19 overall record a season ago. The Pride came to San Marcos for the CenturyTel Premier Tournament last season as the Bobcats won, 3-1, to even the all-time series at 2-2. Middle blocker Anissa Whitney is the Pride's top returner, finishing with 251 kills and 207 blocks last season.

Texas State take on the Griffins for the first time ever when the two teams meet on the final day of the Hofstra/Asics Invitational. Canisius finished 2009 with an 11-18 record. Samantha Good, a sophomore middle blocker/right side hitter, was named to the All-MAAC Second Team as a freshman after leading the team with 2.77 kills per set.
