Bobcat Baseball Garners All-Southland Conference Honors

May 24, 2010

Frisco, Texas - Sophomore Carson Smith was named the 2010 Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, while the Texas State baseball team placed six members on the All-Southland Conference teams, released league officials this afternoon.

Smith marks the second consecutive Bobcat to earn the superlative awards, joining All-American Kane Holbrooks (2009 Pitcher of the Year) and Keith Prestridge (2009 Newcomer of the Year). This also marks the first time in Texas State history a player has earned both awards.

The Midland, Texas native made 22 appearances on the mound this season and started in 12 games. The sophomore won a team-high and league second-best nine games (9-3) and in 100.1 innings pitched, posted the No. 2 SLC ERA with a 2.78. Smith held opponents to a .227 batting average while striking out 90 on the season, No. 10 all-time in the Texas State single season record books. In the right-hander's career season, he has tossed six complete games, five of which have come in his last consecutive starts, and shutout three opponents. Smith also has three saves on the season and in his last 31 combined innings pitched, has allowed just one earned run.

Smith received first team honors, as well as teammates Kyle Livingstone and Kyle Kubitza. Livingstone led the team and finished the regular season fourth in the league with a .373 batting average. The senior leads the team with 60 RBI to date and has recorded 15 multi-RBI games. Kubitza closed out the regular season hitting .351 with 29 hits for extra bases. The sophomore tied Livingstone's mark with 10 home runs this season and has brought in 50 RBI.

Bobcat Bret Atwood (outfield) picked up his second-straight all-conference honor, joining Jeff McVaney (designated hitter) on the conference second team. Jason Martinson (shortstop) earned third team honors, while Senior Laurn Randell (outfield) was named honorable mention.

The league offices also named UT Arlington's Michael Choice as the Player of the Year and Hitter of the Year. UTSA's Ryan Dalton was named the conference Freshman of the Year and Northwestern State's Chad Sheppard was named relief pitcher of the year. Stephen F. Austin head coach Johnny Cardenas was named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year.
