Kyle Livingstone went 3-for-4 and drove in a game-high five RBI while Carson Smith held UT Arlington scoreless for seven innings as both performances led to a 10-0 run rule victory for the Texas State baseball team Thursday night at Bobcat Field. The Bobcats are now 33-19 overall and 22-9 in Southland Conference play.
Northwestern State defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 8-5, tonight, giving Texas State sole possession of first place in the league standings.
Livingstone recorded a two-run single in his first at-bat and closed out his appearances at the plate with a three-run homer, his 10th of the season, in the bottom of the sixth.
Tonight's win marked Smith's fifth-consecutive complete game as a starter, second-straight shutout and fourth shutout overall. The sophomore struck out five batters for a single-season total of 89, cracking the Top 10 all-time record for the Bobcats.
Smith retired Maverick Michael Choice on strikes to shut down the first frame in order and Texas State's offense jumped on the foe just as quickly when a pair of base hits were followed by a walk to load the diamond, awaiting Livingstone's two-run shot. Jason Martinson followed up with an RBI fielder's choice to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.
The Mavericks didn't reach scoring position until the fourth inning when a pick-off attempt went awry and Nick Orr advanced to second base. Choice was hit by a pitch with one out in the next play, but a pop up in foul territory and ground out followed to eras the threat. Smith went on to retire the next seven of 11 batters faced.
The Bobcats continued to score, tacking on its fourth run in the bottom of fourth before exploding in the sixth to score six runs off five hits to claim its sixth run rule victory of the season.
All but one Bobcat starter tallied a hit Texas State's 15-hit outing. UTA's four hits were scattered throughout the lineup.
The two teams will continue the final series of the regular season tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m.
