Softball Holds off Lady Demons, Splits Doubleheader

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State (23-22, 18-8 SLC) held off a Northwestern State (25-23, 11-15 SLC) rally in game two to come away with a split today at Bobcat Field. Northwestern State won game one 1-0, but Texas State came back in game two to capture a 6-4 victory.

Game 1

Despite a solid effort by the Bobcats on the defensive end, it was not enough as they failed to score a run, dropping game one to Northwestern State 1-0.

Chandler Hall had a no-hitter through five innings, before Northwestern State's Stormi Stech led off the sixth with a single to left center. After a sacrifice bunt by Taywanee Edmonds and a groundout by Randi Stuard, Stech advanced to third with two outs. Kayla Cole recorded an RBI single to left center to drive in Stech to take a 1-0 edge over the Bobcats.

The Bobcats recorded six hits, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Demons captured the 1-0 victory.

Kylie Roos earned the shutout for the Lady Demons with five strikeouts and zero runs allowed.

Hall (15-12) suffered the loss in the circle allowing just one earned run in the complete-game effort. She fanned nine batters and allowed two hits.

Game 2

Haley Lemons was 3-for-4 in game two, while Jenna Emery and Chandler Hall both picked up a pair of RBIs to lead Texas State.

Back-to-back singles by Haley Lemons and McKenzie Baack in the bottom of the fourth inning, paved the way for Jenna Emery to hit a RBI single to left center driving in pinch runner Brooke Baker for the Bobcats first run of the day.

Ashleigh Cole recorded a RBI single to left field in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 1-All. The Lady Demons had bases loaded with two outs in the inning, but a pitching change that brought Elizabeth Dennis in the game got the Bobcats out of the hole. A groundout to the pitcher by Ashleigh Kuhn ended the inning for Northwestern State, but not before it tied the game.

Pinch hitter Lacey Duncan led the Texas State rally in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff single. The Bobcats registered seven hits and scored five runs to go up 6-1.

Northwestern State was determined to stay in the game when pinch hitter Kylie Roos hit a two-run homer to left field to come to within three. Kuhn hit an RBI single down the left field line to drive in a Lady Demon. Texas State was able to hold off the Lady Demon rally when relief pitcher Chandler Hall stopped NSU on a double play to end the game and escape with the win.

Elizabeth Dennis (2-5) earned the win today coming into the circle in the fifth inning. Hall picked up her first save of her career to help the Bobcats secure the victory.

Tomorrow's single game will begin at noon. The Senior Day presentation will occur at the conclusion of the game.
