Final Stats
Waco, Texas - Baylor posted two four-run innings and took advantage of three Texas State errors to take a 12-3 decision from the team Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark. The Bobcats fell to 17-10 on the season, while the Bears improved to 16-10.
The Bobcats staked an early 2-0 lead over the Bears with a pair of hit-and-runs in the first and second inning. Laurn Randell led off the game with a base hit into shallow right field, and with one out, Jason Martinson brought the senior home with a hard-hitting triple to left center.
In the second, Jeff McVaney took advantage of a leadoff walk by scoring on back-to-back hits from Shaun Garcia and Andrew Stumph.
Bobcat starter Brian Borski maintained the edge by stranding a pair of Baylor base runners in the opening two frames, but the tying run returned in the third with no outs, leaving the junior to work out of the jam. Unfortunately, a wild pitch put the pair on second and third base, respectively, and a follow-up sacrifice fly and base hit erased Baylor's deficit for a 2-2 tie ball game.
The Bears used a two-run fifth inning to take its first lead of the game and the Bobcats countered in the top of the sixth with an RBI single from Garcia. McVaney, who reached on a walk, advanced to third on Garcia's line drive into left field, but was caught at home to end the rally.
Offensively, that was all Texas State could produce, but Baylor continued to round the bases, and took advantage of a Bobcat error to score four runs in the sixth. Another error in the eighth coupled with a three-run home run from Jake Miller took the Bears ahead 12-3.
Kolt Browder was credited with the win for Baylor, tossing five solid innings and shutting down Texas State's offense for just three hits and one run. Craig Fritsch held down the final three innings and picked up his second save, allowing five hits, but no runs to score.
Borski took the loss for Texas State, and fell to 1-5 on the season. The junior scattered eight hits, allowed four runs and had four strikeouts.
Texas State returns to the diamond this weekend when they host Central Arkansas in Southland competition. First pitch Friday night is set for 6:30 p.m.
