Final Stats
SAN MARCOS -
The Texas State baseball team suffered its third shutout of the season Sunday afternoon after committing four errors and tallying just five hits in an 8-0 dropped decision to No. 30 Northwestern State at Bobcat Field. The Bobcats went 2-1 to claim the series with the Demons and still maintain a first-place standing in the Southland Conference.
Texas State is now 24-14 overall and 15-6 in league play. NSU improves to 26-14 and 13-7, respectively.
NSU hurler Andrew Adams improved to 3-3 on the season, after a six-inning stint on the mound that held Texas State scoreless with only four hits. Chad Sheppard picked up his ninth save in the final three innings. The sophomore allowed one hit and struck out three in the effort.
"Hats off to their pitching today," said head coach Ty Harrington. "I thought they did a tremendous job on the mound."
With Adams taking care of Texas State's offense, Northwestern State complemented the arm. After three complete innings, Northwestern State had built a 3-0 lead over Texas State. Eric DeBlanc singled to lead off the game, and a walk and a wild pitch put the Demons in scoring position. A pair of groundouts sent the two runs across for the early lead. NSU loaded the bases in the third and tacked on its third run when Adam Roy was hit by a pitch. Fielding Pittman came in to relieve Brian Borski thereafter and tossed double-play ball to control the damage.
Pittman held the Demons scoreless in the fourth and Lee Colon kept the Demons quiet in the fifth and sixth frame. It wasn't until the seventh that NSU broke through, rapping out four hits paired with a fielder's choice and catcher's interference to stake a 6-0 lead.
A solo homer from Roy highlighted NSU's two-run top of the ninth inning to close out the game, 8-0.
Texas State left six runners on base in today's effort, while NSU stranded nine.
Borski went 2.1 innings, allowed three runs off two hits and fell to 1-6 with today's loss.
Texas State will return to the Bobcat Field Tuesday night in a 6:30 p.m. contest with Houston Baptist.
