AUSTIN, Texas- Texas State softball was unable to produce a win over No. 17 Texas like it did last week, as the Longhorns earned a 8-0 victory in six innings over the Bobcats tonight at McCombs Field. The loss drops Texas State to 17-14 overall, while the Longhorns improve to 29-8 on the season.
Tonight's loss gives the Bobcats a 1-1 split with the Longhorns this year. Texas State beat UT last week at Bobcat Field, 9-7. Texas' win ends a three-year stretch of losing to the Bobcats at home. The Longhorns lead the all-time series 24-14.
Blaire Luna picked up the win in the circle for UT tonight. Luna fanned 12 batters and allowed just two hits with zero runs scored.
Chandler Hall recorded the loss for the Bobcats as the sophomore pitched 3.1 innings against UT. Hall allowed five earned runs and struck out two batters.
The Longhorns capitalized on two Texas State errors in the first inning, as they jumped ahead of the Bobcats with a pair of runs. Luna was a steady threat in the circle for UT as she managed to keep the Bobcats hitless through five innings.
The Longhorns recorded their first hit of the game on a double to left center by Raygan Feight; which led to a sacrifice fly by Courtney Craig in the second inning. Texas tacked on another run in the third inning and then Courtney Craig extended UT's lead to six after four frames with a two-run homer to left field.
Despite a rough night the Bobcats never gave up as they registered back-to-back hits to start the sixth; ending their hitless drought. Junior leftfielder Allyce Rother tallied Texas State's first run of the game with a blooper over the first baseman's head to lead off the sixth, then senior centerfielder Kristina Tello followed with a single to the pitcher. Unfortunately, Texas State stranded both runners on base to end the inning.
Courtney Craig stepped to the plate in the bottom of the sixth to blast a two-run homer over the left field fence to tally her second homer of the night to give the Longhorns the victory.
Texas State will continue its four-game road stretch this weekend when it heads to Conway, Ark. to play a three-game series versus Central Arkansas from April 2-3. Friday's double header is set to begin at 5:0pm, while Saturday's single game will start at 1:00.
