Softball Splits with UT Arlington in SLC Opening

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State softball bounced back from a 3-1 loss to UT Arlington in game one, to blank the Lady Mavericks 3-0 in the second game of today's double header. The split gives the Bobcats a 1-1 start in league play. Both teams return to Bobcat Field tomorrow March 3, to play the last game of the midweek series at 2:00pm. Texas State pushes its record to 4-10, 1-1 in the Southland Conference, while UT Arlington moves to 9-7, 1-1 in the SLC.

Freshman Haley Lemons recorded her first career home run after she blasted the ball over the right field to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

Cara Hulme tied the game in the top of the fourth at 1-All with a shot past the center field wall for her fourth of the season.

Both teams went scoreless for the next two innings before UT Arlington once again saved up its hits for the seventh inning to come back and defeat Texas State, 3-1. After a 1-6-4 double play, Rebecca Collom single to left field, before Samantha Chumchal stepped to the plate. Chumchal hit a home run to left field to give the Lady Mavericks a 3-1 lead, with the Bobcats still having to bat in the bottom of the seventh.

Lemons led the bottom of the seventh off with a walk, but Texas State was unable to get any more runners on base, falling to the Lady Mavericks, 3-1. Chandler

Hall (3-5) pitched a complete game giving up three runs on three hits, while striking out six batters. UT Arlington's

Teri Lyles (5-2) earned her fifth win of the season. She allowed just one run on three hits in 26 batters faced. Both teams tallied three hits, with the Bobcats recording one in error in the game.

With one out in the bottom of the third, Kristina Tello tallied the Bobcats first hit of the game with a single to center field. Lindsay Matt batted next singling down the right side, moving Tello to second base. Tello later advanced to third on a pop fly, before Lemons drove her home on a single to shortstop. The Bobcats collected three hits and one run in the inning to get some momentum swinging their way.

Texas State remained quiet in the fourth until a Megan Parten walk to lead off the fifth inning, followed by a double from Matt down the left field line pushed pinch runner Brooke Baker to third. The Bobcats weren't done yet as Hall stepped to the plate with one out to knock the ball to the right center wall for a two-RBI double, driving in Texas State's last two runs of the game.

Freshman pitcher Anne Marie Taylor (1-4) had an amazing game on the mound, as the rookie allowed just two hits in seven innings to pitch her first complete game. Taylor fanned a career-high eight batters to help Texas State to a 3-0 showing pass UT Arlington.

Matt was 2-for-3 from the plate with a run scored. Hall tallied two RBI in the game.

The Bobcats came together for three runs on six hits and just one error. They held the Lady Mavericks to two hits and one error in the game.
