LAKE CHARLES, La. - Texas State put a stop to McNeese State's attempt at a comeback when it scored two runs in the ninth inning to take the win on the road. The Bobcats improve to 11-12, 7-2 in the SLC, while the Cowgirls fall to 15-13, 5-4 in the league.
Texas State jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the first inning. With the bases loaded Jenna Emery was hit by a pitch to move Kristina Tello home for the Bobcats first run. Anna Hernandez scored the Bobcats second run of the inning after McNeese State's Marissa Koetting was called for catcher's interference with the bases loaded to move all runners and put Allison Snow on first.
The Bobcats had the bases loaded again in the third inning, but they couldn't capitalize on it ending the inning with no runs scored. They were able to hold the Cowgirls to just one hit entering the fourth inning.
The game took a slight slow spell where neither team was able to garner more than two hits in an inning for a span of five innings. The Cowgirls came alive in the bottom of the seventh when Heather Mosser and Marissa Koetting hit back-to-back solo home runs to keep McNeese State in the game and advance to extra innings. Texas State had the first chance in the eighth inning to put runs on the board when they had two runners on with one out. But a strikeout and a pop up ended the inning for the Bobcats.
Hernandez led the ninth inning off with a double to right field and a sacrifice bunt by Hall advanced Hernandez to third. An error by the Cowgirls left fielder saw Lemons reach second base and Hernandez score at the plate. A single by McKenzie Baack to right field pushed pinch runner Leah Boatright to third base giving Texas State runners on first and third. Then a sacrifice bunt by Emery gave Texas State its fourth run of the day.
With McNeese State unable to record any runs in the bottom of the ninth, Texas State earned its second win over the Cowgirls in as many days.
Anne Marie Taylor was the winning pitcher as she entered the game in the seventh inning, holding the Cowgirls to two hits and zero runs scored in her 2.2 innings in the circle.
Anna Hernandez went 3-for-5 on the day, including scoring the game-winning run in the ninth.
Meagan Bond was the losing pitcher on record having pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters.
