SAN MARCOS - A pair of home runs from Shaun Garcia and Jason Martinson Saturday afternoon lifted the Texas State baseball team to a 15-6 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions at Bobcat Field. The Bobcats claim the series with the victory, and look to take the weekend sweep in tomorrow's 11 a.m. game.

"We had more quality at-bats today," said head coach Ty Harrington. "We recognized decent pitches today, and took quality swings."

The Bobcats recorded 16 hits, led by Martinson's 3-for-4 outing with five RBI. The junior's three-run shot in the bottom of the first gave Texas State an early lead over PSU, and the team tacked on two more runs through the third inning for a 5-0 edge.

Nonetheless, Penn State stayed in the game by taking advantage of a blundering Bobcat ball club and turned three errors and six hits over the third and fourth frame into five runs to tie the game.

A pair of RBI singles from Tyler Sibley and Kyle Livingstone lifted the Bobcats in the bottom of the fourth and an RBI groundout from Martinson pushed the lead to 8-5.

Texas State truly broke open the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring seven runs off nine hits for a 15-5 lead. Penn State scored its final run in the seventh, when a double-play sent a runner on third home for the final score of the game.

Laurn Randell, Livingstone, Bret Atwood and Sibley all finished with a multi-hit night.

"At this point in the season, it's not about what they (Penn State) are doing," added Harrington. "It's about what we are doing and we played well today, but we have to do better defensively tomorrow."

Garret Carruth was credited with the win in today's game, entering in the sixth and allowing just one run off four hits in his two inning stay. Carruth struck out three batters.

Brian Borski started on the mound for the Bobcats and went 4 2/3 innings, surrendering eight hits and five runs, three of which were earned while striking out three.

The series with Penn State wraps up tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
