Women's Tennis Puts Up Hard Fight Before Surrendering 5-2

San Marcos, Texas- - In a match that featured two undefeated Southland Conference women's tennis teams, UT Arlington withstood a strong challenge from Texas State before pulling out a 5-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.

UTA had a 4-3 overall record and was 4-0 in Southland Conference play, while Texas State also boasted a 4-0 record in league play and was 8-3 overall entering Saturday's match.

The Mavericks earned the team point in doubles to take an early 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. UTA's Klara Jagosova and Daiana Negreanu defeated Andrea Giraldo and Melissa Hadad 9-7 in the top doubles match. Monika Hadvigerova and Katarina Micochova defeated Gabriela Rojas and Mariana Perez 8-5 and Nikola Matovicova and Maria Martinez-Romar edged Nyssa Peele and Kiki Kruse in the other match 9-8.

UTA looked to be in complete control after Micochova defeated Rojas 6-3, 6-2 in the third-seeded singles match and Martinez-Romer beat Perez 6-2, 6-0 in the number four match.

But, Texas State fought back into contention when Giraldo won her top singles match over Jagosova 6-3, 6-1 and Peele won her sixth-seeded match over Matovicova 7-6, 6-1. Those two victories made the score 3-2 with two matches left to be decided.

In the fifth-seeded match, Kruse held a 3-1 lead in the second set after dropping the first set 6-2 against Negreanu. In addition, Hadad won the second set of her match 6-4 after falling 6-1 in the first set against Hadvigerova.

But, UTA held on for the victory as Negreanu came back to edge Kruse 7-6 in the second set and Hadad fell 6-3 in the third set to give UTA a 5-2 victory.

Texas State will play their next match on March 27 at Lamar.
