The Texas State men's basketball held a 12-point lead throughout the majority of the first half, but foul trouble combined with an on-target mark from Southeastern Louisiana at the free throw line forced the Bobcats to drop a 75-66 decision Wednesday night at the University Center.
Texas State falls to 10-12 overall and 4-4 in Southland Conference play, while SLU improves to 13-8 and 5-3, respectively.
The Bobcats were led by Tony Bishop who notched his second-career double-double with tonight's 19-point, 10-rebound effort. Ryan White chipped in 15 points to aid Texas State's tally.
Patrick Sullivan led the Lions with 23 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks, while Deshawn Patterson scored 21 points and Brandon Fortenberry finished with 12 to aid the team's win.
Texas State took charge within the opening minutes of the game and at 13:46, Ryan White drained a three-pointer to spark an 11-4 run, giving Texas State a 22-11 edge. The Bobcats managed to push the margin to 12 points by the four-minute mark, but that would be the most for the half.
The Bobcats closed out the first stanza on an 0-for-4 effort from the field with a pair of turnovers, while the Lions scored nine unanswered points to trim the lead heading into the break. Texas State held on for a 32-29 lead at halftime.
Out of the break, Patterson and Sullivan combined for 14 points each, while Texas State tried to match the pair on an 18 percent effort from the field.
Despite the numbers, Texas State remained with two possessions throughout the final stanza; and with just under six minutes left on the clock, a free throw from Cameron Johnson put Texas State two points away from tying the game, 57-55.
The two-point deficit trickled away as SLU shot 26-for-36 from the free throw line in the final half. For the game, the Lions shot 30-for-45 for a 67 percent showing.
Texas State closed out the game shooting 30 percent from the field, 32 percent from three-point range and a season-high 82 percent from the free throw line (22-of-27).
SLU outscored Texas State 26-18 in the paint, but the Bobcats outrebounded the foe 39-37 and finished with a 13-11 advantage on points off turnovers.
Texas State continues Southland action Saturday afternoon when they play host to McNeese State at 4 p.m. inside Strahan Coliseum.
