Hancock Wins High Jump in Day One of SLC Indoor Championships

NORMAN, Okla. - Valerie Hancock topped her competition in the high jump to take the indoor crown for the second time in her career today at the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, being held at the Mosier Track Facility on the campus of the University of Oklahoma. The women sit in second place after day one with 34 points. The men are in seventh place with 19 points.

The women opened the day with the pentathlon. Valerie Hancock scored 3,595 points in the pentathlon to take second place, while Katie Evans comes in third with 3,468 points. Danessa Lyssy rounded out the trio placing seventh with 3,196.

Hancock rebounded from a second-place showing in the heptathlon to win the high jump title with a height of 1.70 meters (5-07.00). Evans captured fifth place with a height of 1.60 meters (5-05.00), while Brooke Hewitt placed sixth with the same height. The Bobcats tallied 17 points in the high jump.

The distance medley relay of Lindsey Maxwell, Morgan Canty, Ksenia Beburishvili and Maria Lopez placed eighth with a time of 12:55.70.

With three events left in the heptathlon Ben Marvin sits in sixth place with 2,798 points. Brett Berry had 2,588 points. Landon Ferguson and Dmitri Kabakov tied for second place in the pole vault with a height of 4.80 meters (15-09.00).

Daniel Schmidt placed seventh in the weight throw with a mark of 16.58 meters (54-04.75).

Aaron Jones and Kevin Aje both qualified for the 60-meter dash finals tomorrow. Jones recorded a time of 6.83 and Aje ran a time of 6.89.

Freshman Jack Petersen locked up the last qualifying spot in the 800 meters, clocking a time of 1:56.38 to advance to tomorrow's finals.

Will Stewart, Justin Longoria, Gil Sheleg and Matt Novak competed in the distance medley relay placing sixth overall with a time of 10:33.42.

Tomorrow's meet begins at 8:30am with the heptathlon 60-meter hurdles. Field events begin at 11:00am with the women's shot put, while running events start at 1:30pm. The 4x400 relay races are set to begin at approximately 4:20pm.
