TULSA, Okla. - Texas State turned on its burners this afternoon, topping UMKC 4-2 in its first game of the Embassy Suites Invitational, hosted by the University of Tulsa. Sophomore pitcher Chandler Hall earned her third win on the mound, as the Bobcats improve their overall record to 3-7.
The first inning began with a leadoff walk by Kristina Tello, followed by a wild pitch that advanced the center fielder to second base. Two outs later, Tello sprinted to home plate after an RBI single to center field by Anna Hernandez.
Third baseman Jenna Emery led the second inning off with a home run over the left center wall for her first of the season and the sixth of her career, to put Texas State up, 2-0.
The Bobcats added to their lead when Leah Boatright homered down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth, driving in Brooke Baker on the play, collecting two RBI.
The Kangaroos recorded back-to-back doubles in the top of the sixth, leading to two runs. It was not enough however, as UMKC fell to the Bobcats, 4-2.
Hall (3-3) gave up just four hits in her fifth complete game, while fanning eight batters. She also went 2-for-3 from the plate, with a single and a double; both down the left field line.
Deanna Fries (2-5) pitched 6.0 innings, with the Bobcats registering six hits and four runs against the pitcher.
On Saturday, Texas State will face Tulsa at 1:00pm and Eastern Illinois at 5:00pm. Texas State and Eastern Illinois have only played once, which was in 2003. The Bobcats won the meeting, 3-2. Texas State leads the all-time series over Tulsa, 5-2, with the last game being played in 2008. Tulsa won that outing, 6-2.
Texas State will close out the tournament on Sunday, with a 10:00am game versus Creighton. Creighton leads the all-time series, 6-3. The Bluejays won the last game, 4-0 in 2008.
The Bobcats return home next week as they host UT Arlington at Bobcat Field in mid-week action. Texas State and UTA will play a double header on Tuesday, March 3 beginning at 4:00pm, and will return to Bobcat Field at 2:00pm on Wednesday, March 3.
