Tyler Sibley belted a three-run homerun in the top of the fifth to break open a tie game and launch Texas State to a 9-7 win over the Houston Cougars Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field. Texas State improves to 3-0 and claims their first sweep of the season.
Sibley finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.
The Cougars had an early jump on the Bobcats, retiring the side and putting up two quick runs in the bottom of the first. Texas State answered back with a solo home run from Livingstone in the second and an RBI groundout from freshman Andrew Stumph.
With the score in knots, Stumph and Shaun Garcia opened the fifth with a pair of base hits and Sibley put Texas State on top with a with a towering homer to left field. Texas State kept the bats hot with three-straight scoring innings, taking a 9-2 lead after eight and half.
Houston did not go quietly and Caleb Ramsey rapped out a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to trim the lead. Matt Creel followed with a double and tried to stretch it to a triple, but was thrown out at third. With two down, Texas State had a tough bout on the mound and could not close out the inning before loading the bases and eventually hitting Joel Ansley to plate the final run of the inning.
Trailing 9-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Houston used two hits to chip away at Texas State's lead. Cannon hit an RBI double to left center and a pair of walks followed to put the tying run in scoring position. Carson Smith was called to the mound and allowed just one final run to score before striking out Jake Runte swinging to end the game.
Smith earned his second save of the season in today's victory. Brian Borski was credited with the win after going 5.0 innings and allowing two earned runs. The junior nearly tied a career-mark, striking out six batters in his 21 faced. (Career-high: 7 vs. Siena (Feb. 22, 2009)
Daniel Neumann went 3-for-5 to lead Texas State at the plate, while Sibley, Livingstone and Garcia added a pair of hits to aid the Bobcats 11-hit tally. Houston also recorded 11 hits in the game.
The Texas State Bobcats will remain on the road for a Tuesday meeting with the Rice Owls. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Reckling Park.
