Tempe, Az. - Freshman Anna Hernandez tallied her second home run of the season, as she helped lead Texas State to a 6-1 victory over Rutgers. The Bobcats were stuck in a rain delay in the top of the fourth, but were able to pull out a win over the Scarletknights. Texas State improves its record to, 2-6.
Rutgers pitcher Nicole Lindley walked Leah Boatright to start the second inning. With a sacrifice bunt by Jenna Emery, Boatright moved to first place on the play, then scored on an RBI single by Allyce Rother. Macie Hair stepped to the plate next and batted the ball to left center for an RBI double. With two runs already scored, Chandler Hall hit a single to left center, advancing Hair to third base. Kristina Tello was walked for the second time this season, before Lindsay Matt singled past shortstop to drive in Hair. Tello scored the last run of the inning for the Bobcats on a throwing error by the second baseman.
The Scarletknights scored their lone run of the game on a single up the middle by Jennifer Harabedian in the bottom of the second, which drove in Mikelyn Messina.
Hernandez led the third inning off with a home run over the left field wall for her second career homer. The Bobcats scored their sixth run of the game after Lindsay Matt tripled to right center to drive in pinch runner Brooke Baker.
Hall (2-3) picked up her second win after a seven inning stay on the mound. Hall retired 12 batters, allowing just one earned run in 27 batters faced. She was also 2-for-3 from the plate, while Matt was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Rutger's Lindley pitched a complete game allowing five earned runs, in 35 batters faced, with seven strikeouts.
Texas State will play No. 5 Arizona State later on today. Due to a rain delay earlier the game which was originally scheduled for 6:00pm will be pushed back. Texas State will close out the tournament on Sunday, Feb. 21 versus Illinois State at 11:00am.
