Softball Closes Out CenturyLink Classic

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State softball closed out its opening weekend of play with its final two games in the CenturyLink Softball Classic. The Bobcats fell to Oklahoma State, 6-2 and UT Arlington, 10-7 to end the weekend and fall to, 1-4 overall.

The Bobcats played Oklahoma State in their first game. With both teams playing hard, Oklahoma State took a 3-0 lead after a double by Julie Ward saw three Cowgirls score at the plate.

Kristina Tello drove in pinch runner Brooke Baker after a single to shallow left center, to give the Bobcats their first run of the game.

Anna Hernandez knocked the ball over the left field wall in the sixth inning to record the first home run of her collegiate career and move the Bobcats to within two.

Tello and Hernandez were both 2-for-3 at the plate, with two RBI and a run. Chandler Hall (1-2) was the losing pitcher on the mound, with 7.0 innings of work. Oklahoma State was able to add two more runs to their count in the top of the seventh to take the game, 6-2, over the Bobcats. Chelsea Garcia finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run for the Cowgirls.

Texas State vs. UTA

Texas State's offense was productive through the first four innings, recording 11 hits and seven runs. Allyce Rother slugged the ball to deep left center in the second inning, providing enough room for Leah Boatright to score at home after singling to left field to get on base.

Lindsay Matt led the rally for Texas State in the third as she led off the inning with a single up the middle. Two batters later Tello singled down the left side moving Matt to second base. The inning resulted in six hits and four runs for the Bobcats, giving them a 5-2 lead.

Tello and Haley Lemons added to the Bobcats score as they rounded the bases to add two more runs to the Bobcats lead.

The Bobcats were up 7-3 at the end of the sixth inning, before UTA rallied back to score seven runs and take the first of four meetings against the Bobcats this season.

Boatright was 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBI in the game.

Samantha Chumchal led the Mavericks, as she was 4-for-4 for the day with an RBI and a run.

Texas State will make its first road trip of the season next weekend as they head to Tempe, Az. to play in the Littlewood Classic from Feb. 19-21. The Bobcats will play five games in the tournament as they get set to face Iowa, Illinois State, Rutgers and Arizona State.

The Bobcats return home on Mar. 2 at 4:00pm, when they host UTA at Bobcat Field in a double header to begin Southland Conference play. They will also play the Mavericks on Mar. 3 at 2:00pm.
