Houston, Texas – Texas State men's basketball suffered its first road loss of the season after dropping an 88-81 decision to Houston Baptist tonight at Sharp Gym. The Bobcats fall to 2-4 overall. Jonathan Sloan led all Bobcats in scoring with a season-high 14 points and nine rebounds. #A.J. Stewart# had 10 points, eight rebounds and five blocks.
Also scoring in double figures was Cameron Johnson with 12, John Bowman and Travis Jones with 11 each and Tony Bishop with 10.
The Bobcats led for most of the game, but hot shooting by HBU midway through the second half hurt Texas State.
HBU took an eight-point lead with 3:17 left in the game after a trey by Andrew Gonzalez. Texas State cut the lead to five with a trey of its own by Jones, but the Huskies responded back with another three. HBU hit 3 of 7 free throws in the ticking seconds to come away with the 88-81 victory over the Bobcats.
The first half was all Texas State as quick buckets by Sloan and Jones to start the game, gave the Bobcats control of the game for the majority of the first half. The Bobcats held the lead until 7:23 on the clock when the Huskies were able to tie it.
HBU's TJ Berry hit a 3-pointer to give the Huskies their first lead of the game with 6:30 left on the clock. Texas State battled hard on the court as Bowman nailed a free throw and Bishop got his own put back to tie the game at 31-All with 5:07 left in the game. The Bobcats kept their offense going and were able to enter halftime up 42-41.
HBU's Gonzalez led all players in scoring with 27 points and five steals. T.J. Berry added 17 points and Michael Moss had 15 points.
Texas State will take a week off before heading to the University of Texas on Saturday, Dec. 11 to play the Longhorns at the Frank Erwin Center. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
