San Marcos, Texas – Texas State (4-9) men's basketball ended 2010 with an 80-59 victory over UT Tyler (4-7). Cameron Johnson had a team-leading 18 points, as the Bobcats routed the visiting Patriots this afternoon at Strahan Coliseum.
Johnson also had seven rebounds and was 8 of 11 from the free throw line on the day. Eddie Rios added 16 points, four rebounds and three steals, while Tony Bishop just missed a double-double with 11 points (4 of 5 FG) and nine boards.
Texas State kept its momentum the entire game and led the whole way, as the Bobcats ended 2010 with an 80-59 victory over the Patriots. In what was a team effort, Texas State shot 44 percent from the field and 67 percent from the charity stripe to come away with the win.
Rios led the game off with a fast break layup, that bolted Texas State's offense and with nine minutes left in the period, the Bobcats were up 20-8 on the Patriots just midway through the half.
The Bobcats went on a 7-0 run midway through the first half that started with a layup by Johnson and a jumper by Jonathan Sloan. The Patriots were finally able to stop the Bobcats scoring spree when Spencer Demon nailed a long jumper.
Texas State took a 36-24 lead into intermission, with its biggest lead of the first period coming with 1:29 to go, when Rios hit a trey to put the Bobcats up by 13. Rios was 4-6 from the field at the half and led all scorers with 10 points.
A dunk by Travis Jones gave Texas State a 63-48 lead with 6:06 to go in the game. Texas State outscored the Patriots 17-11 the rest of the way, as the Patriots were only able to bring the game to within 10 points before Texas State took home the 21 point victory.
Today was just the second meeting ever between the two teams with the Bobcats taking the series 2-0. Texas State edged UT Tyler on the boards 48-32 and had 33 free throw attempts compared to the Patriots nine.
Lance Murphy led UT Tyler with 11 points, five rebounds and three steals. Larry Carpenter and Michael Johnson recorded nine points apiece.
Texas State returns to the court on Tuesday, January 4 to host UT Pan American at Strahan Coliseum. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. The Bobcats won the first outing between the two teams earlier this season in Edinburg, Texas when Texas State came away with the 76-63 victory.
