Denton, Texas – Cameron Johnson netted a season-high 22 points, but it wasn't enough as Texas State fell to North Texas this afternoon at The Super Pit. With the loss, the Bobcats' record dropped to 2-7 this year while the Mean Green improved to 9-2.
Johnson was the game's leading scorer after making all eight of his free throws and seven field goals during the game. John Bowman made both of his three-point shots and finished the game with eight points.
North Texas scored the first seven points in the game before Johnson made a lay-up for Texas State's first two points. The Bobcats finished the opening half making eight of their 10 free throws, but were still trailing 40-25 at halftime after shooting just 26 percent from the field.
Texas State opened the second half outscoring North Texas 6-2 and looked to get back into contention. However, North Texas responded with a 7-0 run to thwart the rally.
The Bobcats rallied another time when Jonathan Sloan made a free throw to pull Texas State to within 11 points, but that was the closest the Bobcats would get. The Mean Green outscored Texas State 45-37 in the second half to pull away with the 85-62 victory.
George Udufuwa led North Texas with 20 points and eight rebounds, and Josh White netted 18 points.
Texas State finished the game making 20 of its 26 free throws, but shot just 33 percent from the field and was out-rebounded 40-30.
Next up for Texas State will be a trip to Cancun, Mexico to participate in ESPN's Cancun Governor's Cup from Dec. 22-24. The Bobcats will play Ole Miss in the first round. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. CT. Texas State will play either Appalachian State or Colorado State in the second round. All games will be held at the Poliforum Benito Juarez.
