Eddie Rios Nets 20, Men’s Basketball Downs UTPA 76-63

– Junior guard Eddie Rios netted 20 points, to lead the Texas State men's basketball team to a 76-63 win over UT Pan American tonight at UTPA Fieldhouse. Texas State improves its record to 2-1. UTPA drops to 1-4 overall.

 

Tony Bishop scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. #A.J. Stewart# just missed a double-double for the second straight game with nine points and nine boards, while Cameron Johnson added nine points and seven rebounds.

 

The Bobcats scored the first points of the game off a Jonathan Sloan layup 39 seconds into the game. The Broncs tied the game up at 2-All, but back-to-back jumpers by Bishop extended the Bobcats lead to 6-2 as the Bobcats would lead for the rest of the half.

Rios drove to the basket with less than 14 seconds to go to put Texas State up by 10 heading into intermission, capping a seven-point run by the Bobcats to end the half.

UTPA traded points with Texas State to start the second half, but six points by Bishop within the first five minutes proved to be too much to handle for the Broncs. Texas State upped its offense and took an 18-point lead with 11:59 to go in the game after a Travis Jones 3-pointer.

Texas State maintained its lead down the stretch and the closest UTPA was able to come was within 11 points with 2:30 remaining. The Bobcats closed out the game and beat UTPA 76-63 on the road.

Brandon Provost led UTPA with 17 points and eight rebounds. Aaron Urbanus netted 12 points for the Broncs.

 

Texas State returns home next week for a pair of home games at Strahan Coliseum. The Bobcats will host Our Lady of the Lake on Wednesday, Nov. 24 at 12 p.m., and then return to the court on Saturday, Nov. 27 to face North Texas at 4 p.m.
