Giraldo Takes Singles Match To Three Sets At Rice

Houston, Texas- - Texas State senior Andrea Giraldo battled Rebekka Hanle toe-to-toe for three sets in the top singles match before she eventually suffered a hard-fought loss as Rice defeated Texas State 7-0 at the Galleria Tennis and Athletic Club on Saturday afternoon.

Giraldo began her match winning a tiebreaker to capture the first set by a score of 7-6. The second set was also decided by a tiebreaker, but this time Hanle won it and evened the match with one set each. The match was decided in the third and final set when both competitors continued to battle back and forth before Hanle won that set 10-4.

Rice also won the other five singles matches as Julie Chao defeated freshman Melissa Hadad 6-0, 6-3 in the number two single matchup. Another Bobcat freshman, Mariana Perez, also fell in the third-seeded match against Jessica Jackson, 6-0, 6-2. In the fourth-seeded match Nyssa Peele suffered her first loss of the season against Ana Guzman 6-0, 6-1.

In the other two singles matches, freshman Gabriela Rojas suffered a 6-1, 6-1 loss against Daniella Trigo and Amanda Alvarado suffered a 6-3, 6-1 setback against Varsha Shiva-Shankar.

The match began with Rice winning all three doubles matches. Giraldo and Hadad fell 8-2 against Guzman and Chao in the top doubles match. Rojas and Perez also suffered a 8-4 setback in their doubles match against Jackson and Alex Rasch. In the third and final doubles match, Alvarado and Peele suffered an 8-2 loss against Rebecca Lin and Henle.

Texas State will travel to Edinburg, Texas on Feb. 6 for their next match against UT Pan American before playing its first home match of the spring against Trinity on Feb. 13 at 11:00 a.m.
