Kelsey Krupa and Aimee Hilburn scored 15 points to lead Texas State in the I-35 Rivalry, but the Bobcats efforts as a team were too small, giving the UTSA Roadrunners a 70-59 win Wednesday night in San Antonio at the Convocation Center.
Texas State drops to 4-13 with the loss and 0-6 in Southland Conference action. UTSA improves to 10-8 and 3-1, respectively.
Trailing 40-29 at halftime, Texas State turned things around and sparked a 7-3 run to trim the gap. At 15:30, Krupa drained a three-pointer to make it a 43-39 game.
UTSA countered the effort with five points of their own, but a pair of jumpers from Anna Brzozowski and Victoria Davis put Texas State back in reach, 48-43. Four fouls sent the Bobcats to the line and five-straight free throws iced by a jumper from Aimee Hilburn with eight minutes to play had Texas State within one possession of claiming the lead.
With a 52-50 score on the line, it was UTSA that pulled away with the help of Judy Jones, on a 13-2 run,. A foul put Kelsey Krupa on the line and a pair of free throws ended almost six minutes of scoreless basketball from Texas State.
"We have to step up and close out our games," said head coach Suzanne Fox. "We have people who emerge from game-to-game, but we need consistency to follow through and win the game."
Texas State shot 27 percent from the field in second half (9-of-34) and a hefty 90 percent (9-of-10) from the free throw line. For the game, the Bobcats finished on a 32 percent shooting effort (19-of-60) and a 90 (17-of-19) percent clip from the stripe.
Davis finished with 11 points and added six rebounds. Hilburn led the team with eight boards on the night.
UTSA closed out scoring with four players in double figures, led by Jermini Malone's 16-point effort. The Roadrunners shot 46 percent in the game (25-of-54) and 50 percent (6-of12) from the three-point line.
UTSA outrebounded Texas State 41-36 and outscored the Bobcats 36-18 in the paint.
Texas State continues its Southland slate Saturday afternoon when they travel to Arlington, Texas to face the Lady Mavericks. Tip at Texas Hall is set for 4 p.m.
