COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas State men's and women's track and field competed at the Texas A&M Invitational today at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium. The Bobcats competed in their first meet of 2010, as the field events led the way today.
For the women Valerie Hancock and Katie Evans participated in the high jump placing in the Top 5. Hancock captured third place with a height of 1.72m (5-07.75). Evans was fourth with a height of 1.67m (5-05.75).
The field events continued to be the women's strongest areas as Jiovanna Martinez placed sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 15.04m (49-04.25). Katy Hanie was 10th with a mark of 14.16m (46-05.50).
Triple jumper Asiya Iskakova took 10th in the event with a distance of 11.41m (37-05.25). Jannah Evans tied for fifth in the pole vault with a height of 3.37m (11-00.75).
On the track, freshman distance runner Maria Lopez placed eighth in the mile run in her first collegiate race with a time of 5:20.41. Heather Bullin recorded a time of 10:25.33 in the 3,000 meters, while Steffanie Armstrong had a time of 10:25.71.
The men placed three guys in the Top 10 in the pole vault with newcomer Logan Cunningham leading the way. Cunningham placed fourth in the event with a vault of 4.73m (15-06.25). Landon Ferguson and Dmitri Kabakov tied for seventh with a height of 4.58m (15-00.25).
Ben Marvin recorded a height of 1.95m (6-04.75) in the high jump to place eighth in the event. Dan Schmidt placed eighth in the weight throw with a mark of 15.50m (50-10.25).
In the sprints Brandon Thomas recorded a time of 6.92 in the 60-meter prelims, while Kevin Aje registered a time of 6.94 in the finals to take 11th. Timothy Young kept things going on the track as he recorded a time of 8.38 in the 60-meter hurdles. Michael Morris wrapped up the men in the distance races as he clocked a time of 9:00.58 in the 3,000 meters.
Texas State will take a week off before competition on Jan. 29-30 at the Houston Indoor Open, hosted by the University of Houston at Yeoman Fieldhouse.
