Texas State put on a second-half rally, but in the end the Bobcats could not overcome an 18-point deficit as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi handed the Bobcats a 68-59 setback on Wednesday night in Strahan Coliseum.
Cameron Johnson led Texas State with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Ryan White added 12 points.Tony Bishop also scored eight points off the bench, while John Rybak and John Bowman added seven points each.
Kevin Palmer scored a game-high 15 points and Justin Reynolds added 14 to lead Texas A&M Corpus Christi. In addition, Terence Jones netted 11 points and Demont Watt scored 10 for the Islanders, who ended Texas State's four-game winning streak and nine-game home winning streak.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi jumped out to quick 4-0 lead on a free throw by Reynolds and a three-point basket by Palmer.
After Ryan White scored a three-pointer from the top of the key, the Islanders seized control of the game with a 10-2 run to take a 14-5 lead with 10:18 left in the half.
The Bobcats used a 7-0 run of their run to close to within two as John Bowman hit a jumper from the free throw and a lay-up off a steal to start the rally. Ryan White capped it with his second three-pointer of the night.
The Bobcats trailed by two with 6:24 left in the half when the Islanders used a 16-3 run to take a 34-19 lead with 1:20 left before intermission. Texas State scored the final three points in the half as Bowman nailed a three-pointer from the left wing to make the score 34-22 at halftime.
The second half began much like the first ended as Islander extended their lead to 45-27 with 14:36 left to play.
From that point, Texas State rallied with a 11-0 run to pulled back to within seven, 45-38, on Cameron Johnson's jumper in the paint off an offensive rebound.
The two teams battled back and forth during the next four minutes before Texas State used a 5-0 run on a pair of free throws by White and a three-point basket by John Rybak to pull to within 53-50 with 4:58 left to play.
But, that was as close as Texas State could get the rest of the way. The Bobcats closed to within three on a pair of free throws by Rybak and one more free throw by Johnson to make the score 58-55 with 2:04 left to play.
But, Reynolds put the game away when he scored on a three-point play with a lay-up and free throw. Then, Desmond Watt scored on a dunk following a Bobcat turnover to increase Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's lead to 63-55. The Islanders went on to win 68-59.
The loss drops Texas State's overall record to 7-9 and the Bobcats are 1-1 in Southland Conference play. The Islanders improve to 7-8 overall and are 2-0 in league play.
The Bobcats play their second straight home game this Saturday when they play host to Central Arkansas at 4:00 p.m. in Strahan Coliseum. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi returns home to play host to Northwestern State.
