Birmingham, Ala. -
Britney Curry and Jessica Elting helped the Texas State women's soccer team out of a three-game drought with a 3-0 victory over Tennessee Tech Sunday afternoon at the Samford Bulldog Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama.
"The team played brilliantly," said head coach Kat Conner. "They did exactly what we taught in practice, and that is to read what the other team is doing and make the in-game adjustments to beat them. They performed brilliantly out there."
Before the first half was over, Texas State had made the necessary adjustments to take a 2-0 lead into the break. At 12:44, Curry found an open left corner of the net when Maddie Piranio played the ball directly onto her left foot.
"BC (Britney Curry) created a lot of chances throughout the game," added Conner. "She played some balls to her teammates and even made some holes for herself and connected on a ball right at the start of the game."
Shortly after, newcomer Taylor Kelley broke through Tech's defense to give Texas State a two-goal lead. Elting played an open ball back to Kelley and the freshman headed it in from 12 yards out into the bottom left corner for a goal.
The Highlanders stacked their defensive efforts with five players in the back field and changed goalkeepers, but the Bobcats managed one final goal in the final period of regulation on a penalty kick from Taylor Person.
"Playing with five defenders really created some problems for us," said Conner. "Thankfully we adjusted with the help of (Britney) Curry and (Jessica) Elting and walked away with a victory. Those two played phenomenal and really led us through the game."
Texas State outshot Tennessee Tech 18-4, and the Bobcat defense allowed just one shot on goal for the Highlanders.
Keeper Deborah Ross notched one save in the 90:00 of action.
The Bobcats return to action Friday night when they travel to Houston for a 7 p.m. game against the Cougars.
