Volleyball Drops Close Call to Marquette, 3-2

MARQUETTE, Wisc. - Volleyball suffered a five-set upset to Marquette this afternoon as they lost, 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 27-25, 25-23, 10-15) to bring their overall record to 1-4. Four players recorded double-doubles as Jessica Weynand led all players with 28 kills.

Freshman Caleigh McCorquodale recorded 17 assists and 10 digs for her first double-double of her career. Senior Brittany Collins also registered a double-double as she tallied 35 assists and 12 digs, while Melinda Cave had 10 kills and 15 digs.

Joining Weynand and Cave in double-digit kills was Mo Middleton with 17.

Set one was close the whole way, but the Bobcats never gave up the lead. After a Marquette attack error to start the game, Middleton tallied the first kill of the match to give Texas State a 2-0 lead. The Bobcats went on to keep edge over the Golden Eagles. Texas State's biggest lead of the set came at 22-16, after McCorquodale served up an ace followed by a Marquette attack error. The Bobcats went on to take the set 25-23 after Weynand delivered a kill to the other side.

Play between the two teams in sets two and four were just as close as set one. Marquette took set two and three by two. Texas State rallied back in the fourth to capture the set, 25-23, and lay down the work for a set five showdown.

With the match tied 2-2, Texas State and Marquette entered the fifth and final set. Marquette came out with a 3-0 lead, but the Bobcats brought the score up to 5-5 after Weynand tallied a kill, followed by two errors by the Golden Eagles. Texas State tied the set at 7-All, but Marquette was able to take advantage of the set and grab the win with a 15-10 performance.

Texas State will play two matches tomorrow on day two of the Marquette Invitational. The Bobcats will face Austin Peay at 1:00pm and Butler at 5:30pm to close out the tournament.
