Volleyball Takes Down UTSA in I-35 Rivalry Match

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State celebrated its Legacy Weekend with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 31-29) win over visiting UTSA. Melinda Cave led the troops with 15 kills as the Bobcats registered their fourth straight win. Texas State's overall record is now 8-9, 2-0 SLC.

"We stayed focus today," said head coach Karen Chisum. "It was a great crowd and win for us today. The atmosphere was amazing."

Jessica Weynand finished the match with 12 kills (.297) and eight digs. Mo Middleton had 10 kills and nine digs. Setters Brittany Collins and Shlebi Irvin recorded a combined 36 assists.

Melinda Cave came out with a killer instinct as she racked up five kills in the first set to spark a Bobcat offense of .571 hitting. Texas State hit .342 and held the Road Runners to .282. The set was fairly even as both teams both tallied 17 kills and were only one dig apart.

The fight stayed with Texas State going into the second as Cave continued to lead the attack. Outside hitter Jessica Weynand and Mo Middleton also joined forces as the trio was able to lead the Bobcats to a 25-19 set win.

In what was a battle of heart and determination Texas State, the Bobcats were one point away from losing with the Road Runners up 24-22 when they made a costly attack error. Texas State scored three straight points when Weynand nailed a kill down the left line to tie the set at 24-24. Both teams traded points for the next couple of series, before a kill by Cave and another one by Middleton sealed the deal. The Bobcats hit .254 to the Road Runners .153. Briana Mason led UTSA with 17 kills and five blocks.

Texas State hits the road next weekend as they travel to Sam Houston State and Lamar. The Bobcats return home on Friday, Oct. 9 at 6:30pm when they host UT Arlington for their Dig Pink match.
