Final Stats
SAN MARCOS -
UTEP Box Score
Michael Torres, Texas State Sports Information
A slow start penalized the Texas State Bobcats Sunday afternoon, leaving them with a 4-2 loss to the UTEP Miners at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. Texas State falls to 3-5-0 on the season, while UTEP improves to 6-2-0.
The Bobcats came out of the gate ready to take an early lead and Britney Curry led the charge with her seventh goal of the season just four minutes into the game. But the Bobcats followed with just one other shot in the half, while the Miners took six shots that transpired into three first-half goals.
Skye Shultz was the first to respond off a cross from Chelsea Winbush at 8:05, and then Winbush took an unassisted goal just four minutes later to give UTEP the lead. The Miners finished off the half with a goal from Brittany Thornton.
"Our attack in the first half was non-existent," said head coach Kat Conner. "I knew we had to make some corrections at halftime and become a more physical team. We needed to come out, put pressure on UTEP and dig out way back into the game."
In the second half, Texas State turned up the intensity and took 11 shots, including four from freshman Serena Hines. Hines managed to take on keeper Chandra Morden and turn one of the attempts into her first-career goal in the 60th minute.
Despite the many attempts that followed, the score remained the same until the final horn.
"Missed goals and opportunities are crucial," added Conner. "If you count those chances, we would have one, but you just have to stay tough and fight the entire game. This game taught us to raise our level of play."
The Bobcats next game will be Tuesday night against Houston Baptist at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
