Texas State kicks off its 2009 season this Saturday at 6:00 p.m. against Angelo State. The Bobcats have been picked to win the Southland Conference this season after winning their first outright Division I conference championship last season. Texas State has eight returning starters on offense, including senior quarterback Bradley George, who has thrown for over 2,000 yards each of the last two years. In addition, junior running back Karrington Bush enters 2009 as a preseason All-SLC First-Team selection after rushing for over 1,000 yards each of the last two seasons. The Bobcats also return four starters on its offensive line.
One important factor for Texas State's success this season could be the fact that the entire coaching staff returns from last season, including defensive coordinator Fred Bleil and co-offensive coordinators Travis Bush and Ben Norton. Also returning on Wright's staff are: defensive line coach Mike Bugar, linebackers coach and special teams coordinator Terrol Dillon, defensive backs coach Steve Irvin, wide receivers coach Kevin Brown, tight ends coach and coordinator of football operations Mike Barela, along with running backs and recruiting coordinator Charlie Reeve.
Following the Angelo State game, Texas State will travel to TCU on Sept. 19, play host to Texas Southern on Sept. 26 and travel to Southern Utah on Oct. 3 to complete its non-conference schedule. The Bobcats open their Southland Conference slate against Southeastern Louisiana on Oct. 3, and also play SLC home games against Stephen F. Austin on Cot. 31, McNeese State on Nov. 14 and Sam Houston State on Nov. 21. The Bobcats play SLC games at Nicholls on Oct. 17, at Northwestern State on Oct. 24 and Central Arkansas on Nov. 7.
Texas State enters the 2009 season ranked 20 in The Sports Network preseason NCAA Division I FCS preseason poll and 21 in the FCS Coaches Poll. The Bobcats were ranked as high as No. 6 by Lindy's after finishing last season with an 8-5 overall record and advancing to the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs for the second time in four years.
