DALLAS, Texas - Amber Calhoun and Jessica Weynand earned all-tournament honors at the SMU Invite today as they led Texas State to a 3-1 (25-14, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22) win over Syracuse to finish the tournament 2-1 and capture second place. The Bobcats improve to 6-9, as they wrapped up non-conference play for the season.
Weynand recorded 19 kills and 15 digs this afternoon, while Brittany Collins racked up 25 assists and 16 digs.
Weynand finished the tournament with 47 kills and 38 digs, with Calhoun adding 21 kills and 12 blocks.
Texas State held Syracuse to just .102 hitting, including .088 and .023 in the first two sets. The Bobcats hit .441 in the first as they got hot first.
The Bobcats went to work early as Weynand nailed six kills on .417 hitting in the first set to lead the Bobcats to a 25-14 advantage over the Orange. After a 3-3 start, the rest of the set belonged to Texas State. The Bobcats built a slight margin over the Orange that was too big to overcome.
Despite hitting .045 in the second, Texas State was still able to remain ahead of the Orange who hit a match low .023 as they went point-for-point with the Bobcats. Texas State won the set on a service error by Syracuse's Kayla Al Kalau.
Syracuse changed momentum in the third as it pulled out its only set win of the day, but it wasn't enough to win the match as the Bobcats took the fourth set 25-22. Kacie MacTavish led Syracuse with 16 kills and 10 digs. Setter Laura Homann had 33 assists.
The Bobcats ended the tournament with wins over William & Mary and Syracuse, but dropped a 3-1 decision to SMU.
Texas State will start conference play on Thursday, Sept. 24 versus A&M-Corpus Christi at Strahan Coliseum at 6:30pm.
