SAN MARCOS, Texas - Texas State loses to SMU, 3-1, in its first match of the SMU Invite. The Bobcats fall to 4-9 on the season. SMU ties the all-time series at 2-2 with today's win. They will hit the floor for the second time today at 5:00pm, when they play William & Mary.
Jessica Weynand recorded her second straight double-double with 18 kills and 12 digs this afternoon. Sophomore middle blocker Amber Calhoun notched a career-high 10 kills, two solo blocks and four block assists. Senior setter Brittany Colins racked up 38 assists and 13 digs to add to her double-double count.
Texas State took the first set by five, to pull in front of SMU. Jessica Weynand had seven kills in the first set to hit .545 to start the match, while Texas State hit .412 as a team.
SMU came back in the second, going on a seven-point run, to jump ahead of the Bobcats, 16-7. Mo Middleton ended the Mustangs run when she slammed down a kill to the other side. Amber Calhoun added to the score as she nailed a kill down the middle. SMU was able to slow down the Bobcats just enough to keep a safe distance and win the set 25-13, to tie the match at 1-1.
Texas State saw kills from three different players in the first five points to get the ball moving with the set tied at 5-5. Brittany Collins joined in as she laid down a kill to give the Bobcats a 6-5 edge. Block assists by Calhoun and Weynand and a service ace by Middleton moved the score to 8-5 in favor of the Bobcats.
Texas State remained ahead of SMU, but the Mustangs caught up with the Bobcats forcing Texas State to take a timeout at 17-14, before SMU got any closer on the board.
The third set went into extra points with the Mustangs coming out on top, 32-30, to go up, 2-1.
The fourth set carried momentum on both sides of the net with Texas State leading most of the way, but at 22-22, SMU scored three more points to take the set and the match.
SMU improves to 8-4 on the season. Texas State beat SMU on the kills' chart 60 to 52, but the Mustangs had a better hitting percentage of .236 to the Bobcats .172.
Tonight's match between Texas State and William & Mary will be just the second time the two teams will have played. Last time they faced each other was in 1993, when the Bobcats beat the Tribe 3-1, at the William & Mary Invite.
Syracuse will face Texas State for the first time ever on Saturday. The Orange will be the Bobcats second Big East opponent this year.
Texas State will start conference play on Thursday, Sept. 24 versus A&M-Corpus Christi at 6:30pm.
