HOUSTON - The Texas State soccer team held a one-goal lead at halftime, but a winless Houston Cougar team clawed their way back into the game with a pair of late goals to edge the Bobcats 2-1 in overtime at Robertson Stadium Friday night.
Texas State falls to 2-4 with the loss, while Houston improves to 1-4 after picking up its first win of the 2009 season.
"We were leading the whole game, but the style of play shifted in the final minutes," said head coach Kat Conner. "We fell out of rhythm and it opened us up to play their style of ball and unfortunately, they took over from there."
Before the tide shifted, Curry's goal in the 32nd minute appeared it would hold out for the Bobcats second-straight victory. On an unassisted shot from nearly 18 yards out, the junior used her speed and agility to beat Cougar keeper Lauren Frazier to give Texas State a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats were less than ten minutes away from taking the victory when Houston cracked the defense to tie the game. Nikki Echeverria nailed a cross to Melanie Adleman who was posted in the center of the net and at 80:20, Houston tied the game with a goal wisped past Deborah Ross.
Fighting in the overtime, UH came up first at 99:34 with a goal from Jessica Zavalza to seal the win.
In the tight match, both Texas State and Houston registered seven shots on goal. Ross earned five saves in tonight's decision while Frazier earned six.
"We just need to regroup from top to bottom and go pick up a win against Centenary," added Conner.
Due to weather, Texas State's meeting with Centenary has been cancelled.
