Bobcats Come up Short Versus BYU

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Texas State wrapped up the Tiger Invitational today with a 3-0 loss to BYU. The Bobcats hung in there, but fell to the Cougars 17-25, 22-25, 16-25. Jessica Weynand was named to the all-tournament team. Texas State ended the tournament 0-3 and will return to the court on Wednesday as they host Texas Tech in its home opener.

Jessica Weynand was the spark of the offense as she recorded a season-high 18 kills (.293) and tallied seven digs. Brittany Collins recorded her third straight match of double-digit assists this time registering 20 for her first 20 assist game of the season.

In the first set the Bobcats were able to tie the set six times, but were never able to gain the lead. The Cougars were able to spread their lead and take the set by eight.

The Bobcats battled back and forth with BYU in the second set as there were nine ties and four lead changes in the set. A service error by BYU brought the game to a 19-19 tie after a Texas State timeout. BYU went on to score four kills on the next five serves to take a 23-20 lead. Texas State fought back with a Weynand kill to bring the score to within two at 24-22, but a Bobcat service error ended the set and gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead entering the third set.

Unfortunately, the Cougars were able to grab an early lead in the third to take the set 25-16 and take the match 3-0.

Weynand finished the tournament with 34 kills and 22 digs. Collins had 56 assists and 19 digs to end the first weekend of play for the Bobcats.

Texas State returns to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 6:30pm to host Texas Tech at Strahan Coliseum for their first home match of the season. Live stats will be available.
