HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Texas State softball swept Sam Houston State today on the road at the Bearkat Softball Complex. The Bobcats won game one 4-0 and came back in game two to win 12-3. Jenna Emery was 4-for-6 (.667) with two home runs and five RBI. Alex Newton finished the day 5-for-8 (.625) three runs and three doubles. The Bobcats improve to 36-16, 23-6 SLC. The Bearkats fall to 26-24, 15-14 SLC.
The Bobcats came out today ready to play. Alex Newton led game one off with a single to left field. Taylor Hall came up to bat next recording a sacrifice bunt to move Newton to second. Chandler Hall hit a single up the middle, with Newton advancing to third. On a 1-0 count with Jenna Emery up to bat, Newton stole home to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
C. Hall on the same play stole second and advanced to third on an error by the catcher. Emery split a single up the middle, collecting an RBI on the play when Hall reached home. The Bobcats tallied three hits and two runs in the first.
In the top of the fourth Leah Boatright kicked off the inning with a double to left center. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by McKenzie Baack. Second baseman Ryan Kos found an opening in left center to score Boatright at home for 16th RBI of the season and extend the Bobcats lead to 3-0.
Emery kept the momentum going as she ripped the ball over the right field for her fourth homer of the season to lead off the sixth inning.
Texas State outhit SHSU 5-1, scoring four runs against the Bearkats. C. Hall earned the win on the mound, improving her record to 21-9. She tallied five strikeouts against the Bearkats in 22 batters faced.
Emery finished the game 2-for-3 with one run and two RBI. Newton was 2-for-4.
Texas State was fired up in game two as they put up four runs in the first inning. Newton once again led off with a hit as she blasted a double to right center. T. Hall followed up with an RBI single of her own down the right side, scoring Newton.
C. Hall batted the ball to second base and with the Bearkats trying to go for the out at second, they were a second too slow as T. Hall was safe at second and C. Hall earned the fielder's choice at first.
Boatright singled down the left line driving in T. Hall, followed by a two RBI single by Baack that rolled to the right field wall. Baack's hit drove in both C. Hall and Boatright.
Kristina Tello led off the fifth inning with a single to first. Newton recorded her second double of the game when she batted next advancing Tello to third. T. Hall singled to center driving in Tello for the score and a 5-0 lead.
SHSU responded with a Casie Everitt homerun to left field to give the Bearkats a run. Two straight hits by Amy Brown and Sarah Parich put the Bearkats in scoring position. Brown scored on an Alex Servant ground out to third and Parich scored on a Hailey Wiginton single to right center to bring the score to 5-3 at the end of the second.
Texas State was able to hold the Bearkats after that as the Bobcats registered seven runs in the third to come away with a 12-3 win, shortened by the run rule. The Bobcats tallied 23 hits batting .411 as a whole, with an on base percentage of .625. They were able to keep the Bearkats under .200 as SHSU was held to seven hits batting .159, with an on base percentage of .250.
The Bobcats will play in their final regular season game tomorrow at 1:00pm, when they play Sam Houston State in the last game of the three-game series at Bearkat Softball Complex.
