College Station, Texas -
The No. 25 Texas State Bobcats saw a six-game winning streak snapped when No. 15 Texas A&M held their hot offense to just nine hits and walked away with a 13-4 win Tuesday night at Olsen Field. The Bobcats fall to 37-13 on the season, while A&M takes a 34-18 boost to close out the season.
In like fashion, Texas State staked an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Bret Atwood led off the inning with a one out double into deep right center and a ground out from Paul Goldschmidt shifted him to third base. Keith Prestridge kept the fire flowing and launched his seventh home run of the season deep to right center for the early two-run edge.
A&M retaliated with big bats and used four hits, highlighted by a grand slam from Joe Patterson, to score four runs and double the Bobcats tally with a 4-2 lead.
Clayton Ehlert (5-0) maintained the home advantage and left the tying run on base after a two-out rally from Jordan Kopycinski and Jason Martinson ended when Tyler Sibley was retired on strikes.
The Bobcats tally shifted to three in the top of the third with a solo homer from Goldschmidt, but the Aggies scored three runs in the bottom of the second and third inning to take a staunch 10-3 lead.
Goldschmidt continued to push for the rally in the top of the fifth with a two-out single up the middle to reach base. Prestridge followed with a double that bounced off the left field wall and a wild pitch sailed in from Ehlert to send Goldschmidt home for Texas State's final run of the night.
The Aggies bats continued to work, finishing the night with 18 hits, answering the single run with one of their own in the fifth and pushing its final two across in the bottom of the sixth on a trio of hits.
Texas State tied a season-high strike out mark with 11 retired batters on the night.
Goldschmidt and Prestridge were the only two Bobcats to manage a pair of hits.
Junior Garret Carruth suffered the loss and falls to 4-3 on the season. Carruth allowed eight earned runs in his 2 1/3 stint on the mound. The most the Lewisville,
Texas native had given up in a single appearance had been five against No. 8 Texas.
Texas State heads to Arlington for their final three games to close out the Southland Conference regular season. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday night.
